Unless you’ve been living under a rock lately you’ll have noticed there is a new trend in the health & fitness industry – detox teas. There are numerous brands of these so called “detox teas” which claim to help you lose weight/fat just by drinking them and not even changing your diet. Many of them have different blends to be taken at different times of the day which claim to boost energy and detox the body.
You Need to be in a Caloric Deficit to Lose Weight
In order for you to lose weight you need to be in a caloric deficit. This means you need to consume less calories than you burn on a daily basis. If you are not in a caloric deficit it is impossible for you to lose weight regardless of what tea you drink. These detox teas cannot increase your daily expenditure or magically counter balance a poor diet and lack of exercise.
There’s No Research to Prove the Claims
Even though some of the brands of detox teas claim that there is “scientific evidence” that their teas help you lose weight, there is in fact no definitive proof to suggest that by just drinking these teas you will lose weight. If you are not eating right there is no evidence to suggest that drinking tea will make you lose weight. It is often the fact that these products claim to have great results in a number of days (usually 28 days) and this is very appealing to people lacking in will power and motivation to exercise and eat healthy. If they can convince people that they don’t need to exercise or eat healthy to lose weight, just drink some tea, they will succeed in selling their product because people will always try to find the shortest path to achieve their goals.
Celebrities Get Paid to Promote These Products
I’m sure you’ve seen the Instagram and Facebook posts of your favourite celebrities and their detox teas and thought “Well if she’s drinking the tea it must be working, look at her body she’s so slim!”. Don’t be fooled by false advertising. The health & fitness industry is full of products with little or no benefit or evidence behind them but what they usually do have is a famous face backing it. This is a great way to convince customers that a product works magic. If you see a very fit girl/guy pictured with a certain product and they tell you how great it is you might be convinced to buy it. However, all these celebrities get paid generously to promote these teas and other products, that’s their job! The problem is many of them don’t even use the products they promote and if they do there is usually no evidence to suggest that the products they promote actually contribute to the fit body they have.
Many of the Teas Contain Laxatives
Many of these detox teas contain senna leaf which is a form of laxative. The danger with this is that you can lose a lot of water weight and not actually lose any fat. The problems with this is that (1) you are not actually losing any fat and once you stop drinking these teas you will put that weight back on (2) by losing a lot of water weight you in turn lose electrolytes which are crucial for normal bodily functions.
Follow a Healthy Diet and Exercise Regularly
As described above you need to be in a caloric deficit to lose weight and the easiest way to do this is to start with portion control when making your meals. A simple guide for portion control uses your hand for measurements. For guys, each meal (based on 4 in a day) your plate should have 2 palms of protein, 2 fists of vegetables, 2 cupped hands of carbs and 2 thumbs of healthy fats. For women, each meal (based on 4 in a day) your plate should have 1 palm of protein, 1 fist of vegetables, 1 cupped hand of carbs and 1 thumb of healthy fat. You should also exercise regularly and I would strongly recommend adding resistance training to your routine if you are not doing it already. A combination of resistance training and High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) will maximise fat-loss. Drink Lots of Water
Water is extremely important when it comes to general health and losing weight. Water helps with transportation of nutrients and waste products, regulating body temperature and lubrication for joints. In order to maximise weight loss drink 2 cups of water before meals, this helps to make you feel fuller, hydrated and can boost your metabolism.
Get Enough Sleep
Sleep is one of the most overlooked aspects of a healthy lifestyle. A lack of sleep increases your risk of obesity, heart disease, diabetes and more. Make sure you get at least 7 hours sleep each night.
