“Lifting weights will make you bulky!”
“If you lift heavy weights you’ll look like a man!”
These are just some of the lies girls get told by friends and generally the uneducated on the matter!
A huge myth that women believe is that lifting weights will make them grow huge muscles and they’ll look like a man but this couldn’t be further from the truth.
The most important point to understand is that men are very different to women when it comes to their testosterone levels, a hormone primarily responsible for muscle growth. Men have about 10 to 15 times the level of testosterone compared to women and as result it is incredibly hard for women to build a large amount of muscle naturally.
You may be thinking “but what about those bodybuilder women, they obviously lift weights and I don’t want to look like them?”. Believe me this will never happen to you if you stay natural. A lot of these women who are extremely muscular and would put most men to shame take steroids/testosterone to achieve their physiques. It would never be possible for these women to get these levels of muscle growth naturally despite their tremendous hard work in the gym and their nutrition being on point.
An important question you must ask yourself is “what do I actually want to achieve? What are my goals?”. Although everyone is different and we all have different goals I’d be pretty confident in saying that almost every woman/girl want to achieve the following:
- Toned Arms
- Flat Toned Stomach
- Firm Butt
- Toned Legs
Given the goals above I will guarantee you that if you only do cardio you will never achieve them. You must be using some form of resistance training to induce muscle growth otherwise you’ll end up with what people call the “Skinny Fat” body type which is essentially a body that is not overweight but due to a lack of muscle it looks shapeless.
Skinny Fat vs. Fit
By now I hope you realise that lifting weights won’t make you bulky and now I want you to understand that lifting heavy enough weights is actually necessary to achieve these goals. Some women/girls may have already taken the first step by getting over the fear of lifting weights but the next thing you need to do is actually lift relatively heavy weights to ensure you provide enough resistance against your muscles to stimulate muscle growth.
Too often you’ll see girls lifting very light weights while training and the problem with this is that they could easily lift the weight for many, many more reps. The point is that you choose a weight for each exercise that allows you to just about achieve the required reps with correct form. This is a crucial point as you will not get the micro-tears in your muscle fibres necessary for muscle growth by using too light of weights.
Bottom line: Don’t believe the myth that lifting weights will make girls bulky. If you want toned arms, a toned stomach, a great butt and great legs make sure you lift weights. Also, make sure you lift heavy enough weights that actually provide a challenge for you and stimulates muscle growth.
